May is a month of new beginnings! This month we're changing our Creation Care Thursday chat circle, moving towards a theme of the month, based on the Eco Bible, the Laudato Si', and other voices!
This month's theme is God's Land, and this is the fourth of five weeks for May 2025. (See below for information on weeks 1-3.)
History: One might argue that humankind began seeing our planet as one, uniting all humanity, at the birth of the space age.
“In the mid-1980s, when environmental issues weren't considered as relevant as they are today and ESG (see below) had yet to exist as a concept, the visionary Carl Sagan, a Harvard professor and the author of more than 20 books, both on science and science fiction, was raising the alarm about the risks of climate change and the role humanity was playing in destroying the planet.”
Carl Sagan was one of those signing the document "Preserving and Cherishing the Earth: An Appeal for Joint Commitment in Science and Religion" at the Global Forum, Moscow, the National Religious Partnership for the Environment in January 1990.
It begins with “The Earth is the birthplace of our species and, so far as we know, our only home. When our numbers were small and our technology feeble, we were powerless to influence the environment of our world. But today, suddenly, almost without anyone noticing, our numbers have become immense; and our technology has achieved vast, even awesome, powers. Intentionally, or inadvertently, we are now able to make devastating changes in the global environment-an environment to which we and all the other beings with which we share the Earth are meticulously and exquisitely adapted.
…“As on issues of peace, human rights, and social justice, religious institutions can here too be a strong force encouraging national and international initiatives in both the private and public sectors, and in the diverse worlds of commerce, education, culture, and mass communication.”

(ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, and is a framework used to evaluate the sustainability and ethical impact of companies and investments.)
